Royal Scrolls: A Texas-Sized Sweep
The bats broke out, Seth Lugo found whiffs upstairs and KC heads west for the weekend
Royal Scrolls is a recap of the week so far and a preview of the weekend ahead, along with news, nuggets and notes.
You know it’s been a rough ride when six runs feels like 60, but for this Royals club — whose season seemed to circle the drain 72 hours ago — six runs is a tidal wave. A moment of catharsis.
Salvador Perez’s pair of taters helped KC hang a touchdown Tuesday night in Texas. Maikel Garcia yanked a 102.8 MPH rocket into the seats a night later, flipping a one-run deficit into a two-run lead the Royals wouldn’t relinquish en route to another six-pack of runs.
Thursday’s matinee offered more of the same, first Vinnie Pasquantino leaving the yard to draw blood before young Jac Caglianone launched his first career homer to right-center: a 106.5 MPH moonball off a letter-high heater. Of course, Cags wasn’t done there, but we’ll get to him in a minute.
Yes, Kansas City took three games in Texas, but the victories maybe represented something more than tallies in a win column. It was evidence — vindication, even, for the players themselves — that the lineup can be more than a hindrance. The offense powered the Royals to a sweep, on the road, against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, just after this team hit the low point of its season.
It doesn’t get much better than that in a midweek series in June.
The good news didn’t stop on the field, however. Not long before first pitch on Wednesday, MLB.com’s Anne Rogers gave a sigh-of-relief update on ace Cole Ragans.
